SpyPlates is a collection game, not a surveillance tool. It does not read license plates, store plate numbers or images, require an account, or track you. Everything you collect lives on your device.
The short version
SpyPlates is designed to be private by default. We built it so that the app works entirely on your iPhone, without accounts, servers, or data collection. You spot a license plate from a U.S. state, tap to log that state, and your collection grows — all locally.
- No account is required to download or play.
- No tracking — no analytics profiles, advertising identifiers, or cross-app tracking.
- No cloud processing — your collection is not uploaded to us or anyone else.
- No plate numbers are recorded, ever.
- No plate images are captured or stored.
- Offline-first — the game functions without a network connection.
Information we collect
SpyPlates is built to collect as little as possible. In normal use, the app collects no personal information about you. The only information involved in gameplay is:
- Your collection progress — which U.S. states you have chosen to log, your achievements, unlocked Atlas content, and similar game state. This is created by your own taps and is stored only on your device.
- App preferences — settings such as sound or display options, also stored locally on your device.
We do not require, request, or receive your name, email address, phone number, precise location, or contacts in order for the core game to function.
What we never collect
To be completely clear, SpyPlates does not:
- Read, scan, decode, or store license plate numbers.
- Capture, save, or upload photographs or images of license plates or vehicles.
- Maintain any license plate database or automated license plate recognition (ALPR) system.
- Track your location, movements, or driving activity.
- Create advertising or behavioral profiles about you.
- Sell, rent, or share personal data with data brokers or advertisers.
SpyPlates is a game about which states you have spotted — not about identifying any specific vehicle or person.
On-device storage
Your collection, achievements, and preferences are stored locally on your iPhone using the device's standard app storage. Because this data lives on your device:
- It is protected by your device's own security (passcode, Face ID, encryption).
- It is removed when you delete the app.
- It may be included in your personal device backups (for example, an encrypted iCloud or computer backup) that you control. SpyPlates does not operate or read those backups.
Camera and photos
The current version of SpyPlates logs states through manual taps and does not capture images. If a future version introduces an optional camera-assisted feature to help confirm a state, it would be designed to run entirely on your device, would not store or transmit any image, and would only ever activate with your explicit permission. Any such change would be reflected in an updated version of this policy.
Children's privacy
SpyPlates is a family-friendly game suitable for road trips with kids. Because it does not collect personal information, require an account, or include behavioral advertising, it is designed to be safe for younger players. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has somehow provided us personal information, please contact us so we can address it.
Third-party services
SpyPlates is distributed through the Apple App Store. Your download, any optional in-app purchases, and certain aggregate, non-identifying metrics are handled by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy, not by us. We do not embed third-party advertising SDKs or third-party analytics trackers in the app.
Your choices and rights
Because your data stays on your device, you remain in control of it at all times:
- Reset your collection from within the app's settings (where available).
- Delete the app to remove its locally stored data from your device.
- Manage device-level permissions at any time in iOS Settings.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA/CPRA. Since we do not collect or hold personal data on our servers, there is generally nothing for us to access, export, or delete on your behalf — but you are welcome to contact us with any question.
Changes to this policy
If we update this Privacy Policy, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, provide notice within the app or on this website. Continued use of SpyPlates after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
